He’s just terrible
PERSONALITY:

Tarn is a proud and eloquent Decepticon, possessing a way with words in a multitude of ways. Fanatical about the cause, Tarn and his team by the name of the Decepticon Justice Division, are tasked with putting the fear of Megatron into any that would consider abandoning their noble goals. There is no coward, traitor, or unfortunate stray Autobot safe from him. Sophisticated, if not somewhat melodramatic, Tarn enjoys quoting Megatron’s manifestos and philosophical works, priding himself in doing what’s necessary to keep the cause running smoothly. More often than not he spends these moments of waxing poetic about the cause to deploy his special weapon; his specially modulated vocal processor. This Outlier skill is unique only to him, manipulate Cybertronian sparks by adjusting the timbre of his voice. Despite being extremely competent and outwardly confident, Tarn still has insecurities and is highly self-critical. He can be seen berating himself internally for mocking his victim and being “too theatrical”. Tarn is highly xenophobic, hating organic lifeforms more than even Autobots. He believes Cybertronians to be the superior life form and views most organics as primitive vermin as is conveyed in the Decepticon In cannon, his blatant racism is mainly focused around the Black Block Consortia and Galactic Council due to their repeated and deliberate attacks against his kind. He realizes that they actually pose a threat and are well aware that Cybertronians, as a species, are weak and scattered. During their travels, the DJD stumbled upon a colony settled on the Titan Prion. The entire planet scoured of life by the Black Block Consortia, killing everyone except a lucky medic named Nickel. Seeing how throroughly the Consortia were able to demolish this entire Colony really drove home the importance of the cause and their need to destroy organic life. When face with any no mechanical species, Tarn will act defensively and possibly violently because he’s space racist

While the concept of Tarn is enough to send most Cybertronians running, he has an ominous appearance to match. Carrying himself with the utmost pride and dignity, he fancies himself the perfect Decepticon. With his heavily armored war frame and Point One Percenter spark, he is an unstoppable machine. Even Prowl mentions that he is equal in power to even that of one of Megatron’s Phase Sixers, groomed War Machines tasked to destroy worlds on the cusp of collapse, ravaging them entirely so they could be stripped of resources by the Decepticons. Although Tarn is not fighting on the front lines, he does his best to uphold the utmost law of the Cause, functioning as it’s internal Administration.

Tarn carries himself in an almost affable fashion, kneeling next to his victims, putting a hand on their shoulder, and pulling them in close like a friend. This sort of manipulative behavior works to his advantage, playing with the mind and slowly breaking down whatever poor sap on their long list is currently subject to the DJD’s attentions. To his other teammates he is a strong and confident commander, taking charge of any situation easily and earning their respect with his charisma and competence. Though he is perhaps, a bit more of a stick in the mud than they might like, forcing them to fill out Personal Development plans, Self Assessment matrices and keeping balance scorecards. In short he is much more of a boss than a friend in its true meaning.

That isn’t to say that he doesn’t treat his teammates well or care about them. In issue # 39 we find that after killing Overlord and destroying all inhabitants in the Autobot starship, The Lost Light, Tarn and his crew return to the scene of the murder to attempt to steal the ship’s quantum engines. Upon arrival they find both the Galactic Council and the Black Block Consortia both fighting over the same prize. Attacking to assert their dominance and attempt to keep Cybertronian technology out of the hands of their organic enemies, the DJD quickly find themselves outnumbered when both forces team up. In the battle, Tarn’s teammates, Vos and Kaon, get separated on the planet below and the rest of the team were forced to retreat. Tarn fears the worst, thinking them dead. In issue # 8, it was said by one of the Scavengers that Decepticons typically did not go back to collect their dead, and left the corpses where they fell on the battlefield. However, But clearly this is something that Tarn feels is important, and regardless of “normal” Decepticon protocol– even knowing the volatile and potentially risky situation surrounding their return to the battlefield, Tarn returns to collect their bodies (fortunately they were actually still alive). He even goes so far as to snap at Tesarus who began to accuse him of abandoning their teammates before quickly pulling himself together to notify him of their plans. When Deathsaurus later asks Tarn to kill his team to cement their alliance, Tarn says no. Leaving Kaon and Vos behind was an unusual decision forced by extreme circumstances in the interests of saving what remained of his team. Protecting his teammates is natural and what he thinks is right.

That being said, he is also extremely prone to becoming flustered and letting his insecurities get the best of him. We seen in issue 52 that these insecurities can prove deadly to even those that he cares about. After being provoked and humiliated in front of Overlord, Tarn murders Kaon after his second in command begs him to delay their assault until they can rescue the pet. This sort of action directly conflicts with what we had seen from Tarn in past issues, but an argument could be made that he did not kill Kaon due to lack of caring, but because he was afraid that that same compassion and affection that he saw come from Megatron could corrupt him and make him unfit to lead both the DJD and the Decepticons. He had to prove to everyone that he hasn’t got Megatron’s problem,

Really the DJD are the closest thing Tarn has to friends. His commitment to the Deceptions takes up every ounce of his time, making it impossible to be social. What time is not spent hunting traitors is spent fueling his addiction to transforming. He transforms so often that he finds himself often burning through transformation cogs. But, fortunately, his expertise in manipulation come in handy quite nicely. Upon the same territory of the DJD’s home base on Messatine is the Autobot medical facility Delphi which overlooks a nucleon mining operation. Typically Tarn would never allow such a thing to exist so close to his territory, but Delphi’s chief medical officer, Pharma, had something that Tarn didn’t; a seemingly endless quantity of transformation cogs to be harvested from deceased patients. He effortlessly manipulates Pharma into collecting t-cogs in exchange for turning a blind eye to Delphi and it operations. As time passes, Tarn slowly begins increasing the t-cog quota until eventually he had Pharma killing for him and ultimately drove him insane. A similar thing happened years before when he expertly he cajoled Skids into helping him repair his ’teleporter', and made Skids feel good about it with the promise of releasing 50 Autobot prisoners. Tarn even keeps the end of the bargain he made with Skids, by giving him proof that prisoners were released to safety, just as promised. Of course we come to find out that the teleport that Skids was used to fix wasn’t really a teleport at all, but rather a furnace used to melt prisoners down to extract Sentio Metalico to build MTOs for the Decepticon frontlines.

While his goals mainly include upholding the Deceptions and the word of Megatron, Tarn, like the others, realises that he may have lost his way – he’s let the Cause become the cult of Megatron and not it’s own separate entity. Ultimately Tarn comes down on the side of ideals. Not that he didn’t also have deep, intense loyalty to Megatron the mech as well; he had a mental and emotional breakdown and attempted suicide upon finding out about Megatron’s defection. But, what pulled him out of his despair, gave him the will to smash out of the nucleon pod before he OD’ed? It was ideals. The revelation that the Decepticon cause was more than Megatron. Megatron was the founder and figurehead, but the Decepticon ideals he created have taken on a life of their own… and don’t necessarily need him to keep on. Tarn discovered this for himself when the DJD found Nickel; they introduced her to Decepticon teachings and ideas. Despite never having met Megatron, Nickel became an enthusiastic supporter of the cause. I think that was the moment when, deep down, Tarn began to realize that Megatron was, in a way, obsolete. And it was only when he had very nearly ended his own life and he saw Nickel’s face, that that realization came surging to the forefront of his consciousness. This was about something MORE than just Megatron now. As long as Decepticon ideals were alive, Tarn could find the will to live too. Megatron may have failed in his stewardship of the Decepticon cause, but it is a mantle that Tarn is willing to take up himself.

With all of this in his past, it is understandable that when Tarn arrives on earth, inhabiting an organic body, that he is more than a little bitter. His vehement hatred is funneled inward, turning to a severe Dysphoria, causing him to try to do things that are impossible for a human being. Upon failure he will naturally turn to depression, lashing out in anger, even at those close to him. Though,he is a vicious and cruel, his charismatic nature will carry through, allowing him to put on a (sometimes) passable illusion of humanity.
POWER:

Canon:
The power to transform between a robot root mode and armored tank (Note: Tarn will only be able to access his robot form for a maximum of 2 hours every month. This will be followed by extreme exhaustion. The remainder of his time will be spent in a human body.) This form is 35 feet tall and includes a subset of powers including massive amounts strength and a strongly powerful set of armor.

The ability to manipulate a Cybertronian spark with his voice. He can synch the timber of his voice to fall into step with frequency of the listener’s spark and coax it into fizzling and shrinking, ultimately resulting in death.
Non Canon:
The power to manipulate the human heart with this voice. This includes syncing the pitch of his voice to fall in step with the human heart, effecting how quickly or slowly a person’s heart beats. This can replicate the illusion of a heart attack

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[With the Decepticons crumbling around him, Tarn makes his best effort to rally the troops.]

This is Tarn, of the DJD. [His mask flickers in the poor reception of the video feed and his optics glow brightly from beneath it.] I will do my best to keep this concise.

As you may be aware, our esteemed leader has chosen to defect, denouncing the cause and abandoning its ideals so frivolously. While you may have received his call to cast aside arms, to go about your business in a time of peace, I assure you that the Decepticons live on with or without Megatron at our helm.

I urge you to take up your weapons and fight on. Fight to eliminate every threat to Cybertronian happiness and prosperity. Fight against becoming the timid, docile creatures that Megatron has urged you to become. Fight in the name for those who have fallen honorably for what they believe in.

I expect every Decepticon to do their part.

We will be watching, as always.
